First, make a commitment to quit smoking.
It's okay to want to quit smoking for family or friends but make a commitment to yourself first because you're important to others in your life.
5 quit smoking tips for you
1.) Write down your motivations for quitting.
You could start with 'I want to quit because..' and list all the reasons why. To feel better, to live longer, to save the money I spend on cigarettes.
Let's see how much you can save by quit smoking
If you're a pack a day smoker and assuming a pack costs $4, in one year, you can save $1,460.
In seven years, you could save $7,300.
At the end of fifteen years, you could have $16,060 in the bank.
Think about the vacation you could take with that money.
2.) You need to find a support network to help you along the way. The American Cancer Society can help you learn about support groups near you and they can also let you know how to find resources to help pay for medication used to stop smoking.
3.) Talk to your doctor if you've tried repeatedly in the past to stop smoking but haven't been able to on your own. There are medicines available to help stop the addiction.
4.) Join a gym and take up an exercise program. You'll feel better both physically and mentally as you get in shape.
5.) Reach out when you feel the temptation is too strong for you to handle and you need to talk to someone. The American Cancer Society has a phone program where you can speak to a trained counselor free of charge.
There are even specific programs to help you stop smoking cannabis if that's your particular issue.
